North Korean diplomat fugitive defected to South Korea

Thae Yong-ho, diplomata da Coreia do Norte em Londres

Seoul - A diplomat from the embassy of North Korea in London defected with his family to South Korea, reported on Wednesday the Unification Ministry in Seoul.

Thae Yong-ho, who lived in the UK for ten years, arrived in South Korea with his family, said the South Korean Ministry without adding further details.

"Now they are under the Seoul government protection", today said the Unified spokesman Jeong Joon-hee told a news conference gathered by "Yonhap" agency.

The diplomat, who would have applied for asylum in a third country in advance, made the flight "following a thorough plan," he anticipated the newspaper "Joongang," one of the largest circulation of Seoul.

Thae was one of the diplomats who worked in the North Korean embassy in London, and his task was to promote the UK a favorable image of their country.

The clerk disappeared in the past weeks and the embassy "tried to find it, but apparently did not succeed," assured the "Joongang" an anonymous source.

This source also indicated that Thae recently had remained under increasing pressure from Kim Jong-un regime to combat the strong criticism from the international community for human rights violations in North Korea.

Analysts pointed out that due to the repression of the dictator and international sanctions, recently increased desertions of medium and high status citizens in North Korean society, many of whom seek refuge in European countries or the United States.

Still, most of the refugees still people with low resources passing difficulties and looking for a better life in neighboring South Korea, where they know the language and receive help from the government.
