Actor Leonardo DiCaprio in Indonesia Blacklist

After criticizing impact of the palm oil industry on tropical forests, star may be banned from returning to the country



Jakarta (Indonesia) - After calling the attention by winning the best actor Oscar at the awards this year, Leonardo DiCaprio was involved in new controversy. The Indonesian government threatens to ban the American actor of the country after the star have been critical about the local palm oil industry harms the environment and destroys ecosystems.

Great environmental activist, DiCaprio traveled to Indonesia with a tourist visa and, on Sunday visited the Gunung Leuser National Park in Aceh Province, in the northeast. He made criticism of palm oil plantations on site. "A great center of biodiversity ... but the palm oil expansion is destroying this unique place," said the actor.

The site suffers from a major deforestation generated by palm oil plantations, which put at risk the survival of local fauna, represented by elephants, orangutans, rhinos and tigers.

In his account on Instagram, DiCaprio published a picture amid activists Leuser National Park, elephants and reported: "The plantation is fragmenting the forest and reducing the migratory paths of elephants, making it difficult for families of species find suitable sources food and water. "

In another image, it appears hand in hand with an orangutan of Sumatra, the star says that the species also at risk of going into extinction due to the advancement of palm oil plantation. The actor's visit was motivated by his will, along with Sumatra organizations build a mega sanctuary park fauna. Collaboration would be made by the American NGO, the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation.

But the Indonesian government did not like some of this idea and the criticism made by the actor. In an interview with Republika newspaper, the Director General for Immigration of the country, Ronny Sompie, said the visa artist is just a tourist. "If it is in Indonesia for other purposes, participating in activities that disrupt public order and that hurt the interests of the country, authorities are ready to deport him," said the minister.

DiCaprio is no longer in Indonesian soil, but the authorities continue the investigation. "By the terms of his visa and immigration permission, Leonardo DiCaprio has not done anything wrong.
