Japanese government approved the activation of a system that will create a wall of ice in their territory. The idea is not to defend kingdoms - as in Game of Thrones - but try to prevent radiation vented from the wreckage of the Fukushima plant continues to be spread across the seas.
The Fukushima plant produced energy as follows: a series of reactors (which have extremely high temperatures) was placed in contact with tons of water. The material was the liquid evaporate and steam turbines moved, thus generating energy.
It turns out that in 2011, an earthquake hit the plant, these reactors came into contact with seawater, and since then contaminate the region. The Japanese have even tried to take the material away, but the high temperatures and radioactivity hindered the process. The idea of ice barrier is leaving the reactors there, but preventing contaminated water to mix the rest of the ocean.
It is no exaggeration to call the wall of thing. The project consists of refrigerators tubes located 30 meters deep. When turned on, will create the ice barrier, which must have 1,5km long, encompassing all nuclear complex. This is a way to less feasible to build a barrier such - as to make a concrete at sea it would be virtually impossible. And the costs were relatively low for something this size.
The whole project, actually, is a great bet. Both can be that everything goes exactly as planned, and make up the wall of ice when the freezer tubes are operated, as it is possible that the situation will only aggravate the problems of the nuclear accident. "The consequences are still unknown. This is because the expected outcome is based on simulations," said Toshihiro Imai, head of TEPCO (the company that managed Fukushima) to talk about issues about the accident.
