Suicide attacks leave at least 29 dead in Iraq

Attacks in several regions of the country aimed at military targets and militias fighting extremists. terrorist group "Islamic State" claims attacks. Army takes control important village near Mosul.

A series of suicide bombings killed at least 29 people and left more than 60 injured in various parts of Iraq on Monday (04/04), officials said. The extremist group "Islamic State" (EI), which controls territory in the north and west of the country, claimed responsibility for the attacks.

The worst attack occurred in the province of Dhi Qar, in the southeast, where at least 14 people died. A suicide bomber detonated explosives inside a restaurant often frequented by fighters of Shiite paramilitary militia. Police said 27 other people were injured in the attack. The restaurant is located on the main road linking the Iraqi southeast Baghdad.

Almost at the same time, a suicide bomber detonated a vehicle packed with explosives in the city of Basra, killing at least ten people and wounding ten others. The attack damaged 30 cars.

Earlier in the day, a suicide bomber threw his car into a security checkpoint located in a suburb northeast of the capital. Six soldiers were killed and another 13 were wounded in the attack.
Another bomb attack at the headquarters of paramilitary troops in the city of Mishanda, north of Baghdad, leaving four dead and ten wounded. Attacks occurred also in the province of al-Anbar and the southern capital.

Iraqi offensive

According to Iraqi military, government troops retook on Monday control al-Nasr of the village key on the outskirts of Mosul, after destroying six cars pump that should attack them.

Last month, Iraqi security forces launched an offensive to regain Mosul, the second largest city in the country, which is under the control of extremists EI.

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign claimed that an airstrike carried out by the coalition led by the United States destroyed the Consulate of Turkey in Mosul on Monday. The building was occupied by members of the "Islamic State" since June 2014. Ankara authorized the bombing.

Recently, Iraqi security forces, backed by the American-led coalition, won several victories against extremists. In retaliation, the EI promotes bombings against civilians. According to the UN, at least 1,100 Iraqis were killed and about 1,500 were injured in March alone, a significant increase over the previous month. In February, the conflict killed 670 people and left about 1,200 injured in the country.
