Fire spreads LA and causes evacuation of 300 homes
London - Around 300 houses were evacuated as a fire burned 4,450 hectares of dry land in the northwest of Los Angeles on Saturday, the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
The so-called "Fire Sand" started on Friday afternoon and quickly spread to the surrounding area of Santa Clarita, about 65 kilometers northwest of the city. Almost tripled in size in less than a day and only 10% was contained.
Approximately 300 firefighters in temperatures expected to exceed 41.1 degrees celsius fought the fire. Almost 30 helicopters and eight aircraft were deployed to try to prevent the flames from spreading through the bushes and thickets of the region, according to the InciWeb site, accompanying fires.
A firefighter suffered a minor injury and, until Saturday morning, no structures had been destroyed, according to the department. There were no deaths.
evacuation shelters were put to the locals and around 10 roads were closed because of the fire.
The fire is part of a series that has reached the state of dry weather this summer, where the dry grass and shrubs, as well as the high temperatures, are fuel for the flames.
