Beverly Hills is fined for not reducing water consumption
Four California cities, including Beverly Hills, were fined on Friday (30) by not reducing water consumption in the region of the western United States, suffering four years with drought.
This rich town in the heart of Los Angeles will have to pay $ 61,000, and Indio, and Coachella Redlands, located in the desert.
This is the first time that the state government imposes sanctions since it came into force the new law to save 25% of water.
"From end to end of the state, citizens and water agencies make the sacrifices necessary to achieve the conservation goals of California," said the director of the California Water Board, Cris Carrigan.
"Some vendors did not meet the targets," he added.
The four cities spent 8.7 million cubic meters since June. If not reduce spending, to a fine of $ 500 per day can increase to $ 10,000.
In a statement, the Beverly Hills City Hall assured that the city is committed to the plan. To do this, hire more staff to control the water consumption and create new conservation programs.
A recent study released by the University of California (UCLA) showed that the rich neighborhoods spend three times more than the others.
The owner of a mansion of the wealthy Bel Air district of Los Angeles, has spent 44 660 cubic meters of water in a single year. This is equivalent to the consumption of 90 homes.
