WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Less than a quarter of the 21 million of federal employees in the United States hit by a major hacker attack were officially notified that their personal information has been compromised, six months after the leak was detected, said a US government authority -American on Tuesday.
About 5 million notifications about the attack were sent so far, said a spokesman for the US Office of Personnel Management (OPM, its acronym in English) Reuters via email.
The slowness in the notification process highlights the difficulty of Washington in dealing with vulnerabilities in computer science, a growing problem that the government of President Barack Obama has been trying to solve.
After falling victim to two successive cyberattacks, both started in 2014 and revealed this year, OPM was criticized by lawmakers.
The OPM had no additional comments to make immediately about it on Tuesday or on its expected timetable notifications.
Authorities blamed China for leaking the OPM.
