New York, Nov 3, 2015 (AFP) - Japanese auto parts maker Takata will have to pay the United States a fine of 70 million dollars, but it can reach 200 million, because of their defective airbags that resulted in the deaths of at eight dead and over a hundred injured.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), federal auto safety agency ruled that the Takata initially pay $ 70 million, said in a statement released on Tuesday.
In case of violation of this determination, the company must pay the remaining $ 130 million.
By an agreement which covers the next five years, Takata accepts accelerate the repair of car airbags million in the United States.
According to the NHTSA, the defect affects about 23 million in the United States airbags.
