Obama and Turkish President talk about the fight against EI

Washington - US President Barack Obama and the head of state of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a meeting in Washington on Thursday, parallel to the Nuclear Security Summit, which talked about how to move forward in the fight against terrorists of the Islamic State (EI).

The two leaders met in a tense moment in the bilateral relationship and the margin of the 4th Nuclear Security Summit, which includes the participation of leaders from more than 50 countries and was opened today by Obama with a welcome dinner at home White.

During the meeting, the two leaders talked about immigration and also on cooperation between the US and Turkey on security and the fight against terrorism, the White House said in a statement.

"The two leaders also talked about how to move forward in their shared efforts to weaken and destroy the Islamic State", detailed the US government in its note.

Also at the meeting, Obama sent his condolences to Erdogan the attack occurred today in Diyarbakir, in southeastern Turkey, which left at least six dead and 23 wounded.

"The president conveyed to President Erdogan condolences of the American people for the dead and wounded from the terrorist attack today in Diyarbakir and reaffirmed US support in the security of Turkey and our mutual fight against terrorism," the statement detailed.

The Turkish president met this morning with the US Vice President, Joseph Biden, and then gave a conference in the center of Brookings Institution study, in the American capital.

United States and Turkey cooperate in the fight against the Islamic State (EI) in Syria and Iraq, but are divided by the support of the Washington Kurdish militias in northern Syria, considered terrorists by Ankara.

The US government is also very critical of the state of freedom of expression in Turkey and in an interview published this month by the magazine "The Atlantic," Obama suggested that Erdogan considers an authoritarian leader.

Obama and Erdogan had met in December in Paris, during the international summit on climate change (cop21).
