Tanzania: Opposition denounces electoral fraud

The main opposition party in Tanzania evokes the possibility of electoral fraud, the day after the general election. The first partial results are expected today.

Tanzania was the vote on Sunday and shortly after the close of the polls the opposition has raised the possibility of electoral fraud. The first partial results will be known on Monday and the final on Wednesday or Thursday.

These presidential, parliamentary and local elections are viewed with some concern and some fear of post-election violence given that the votes could spell the end of the party domain that has been in power since independence in 1961.

The tension began to rise on Sunday, with the opposition pointing irregularities. Tumaini Makena, spokesman for the main opposition party, the Party for Democracy and Development said last night that there were "allegations of electoral fraud." Other responsible party, Mwesiga Baregu, spoke of "ballot box stuffing".

In search of the successor to President Jakaya Kikwete

Some 23 million voters were called to choose a successor to President Jakaya Kikwete who was not a candidate because the Constitution is limited to two successive presidential terms.

Of the eight candidates, the favorite in the race for the presidency is John Magufuli, 55, candidate of the party in power (Chama Cha Mapinduzi) and the outgoing minister, and Edward Lowassa, 62, candidate for the alliance opposition Ukawa and former Prime Minister which had been dismissed for involvement in a corruption case.

These elections also serve to choose the members of parliament, local councilors and the president and assembly of semi-autonomous archipelago of Zanzibar.
