UNICEF reveals that 700 children arrive daily to Europe for refuge
Geneva 16 Nov (EFE) .- Some 700 children arrive daily to Europe seeking refuge, and from January to September this year the number reached 214,000, said on Monday the United Nations Agency for Children ( UNICEF).
"The number of children and women has increased steadily and there are prospects that this is over," said the body providing humanitarian relief to minor migrants and refugees on their journey to Europe.
The organization detailed that in June there was a child of ten immigrants and refugees who crossed the border from Greece to Macedonia, a proportion that has recently come to one in three.
"The young people are determined to seek a better life, but his future is on the line when making the journey across Europe. We can not turn away from these people," said the coordinator of UNICEF for refugees and immigrants in Europe, Marie- Pierre Poirier.
Only in Sweden, the number of minors who are alone and who have requested asylum this year is 24,000, which exceeds the total of those who did the same across Europe in 2015.
UNICEF announced that special measures are required for this vulnerable group, such as the preparation of places that can accommodate babies and small children in the winter and keep them from dying by the low temperatures that approach in Europe. It is also essential that sudden changes are avoided in the procedures that are performed on borders, he added.
The UN agency said that certain services are needed and special spaces to receive disabled children and who do everything possible to prevent the separation of children and responsible.
This should be supplemented by special protective measures for minors, the search for their families and interpretation services, which can be effective when trying to prevent children from falling into trafficking networks on your way to the final destination in Europe, said UNICEF.
