Eyes: after 40 years without seeing, man returns to do with bionic eye

São Paulo - John Jameson, a resident of Texas, United States, could see again after 40 years of blindness. This happened thanks to an implant made in his eye.

The technology used is an artificial retina, called Argus II. Simply put, the Argus II involves a pair of special glasses and a layer of electrodes that is fixed in the patient's eyes. The technology allows some blind back to see patterns of lights and some images. Despite the better the view is not completely restored.

According to Jameson, since the surgery, your vision has improved every day as your brain adapts to new technology.

"When you're a child, you wake up on Christmas morning and see a tree full of lights, present and everything. This is a great joy. Now, it happens to me every day, every day I wake up and I can see more, "said in an interview with Texas Standard. "When I wake up, I love being watching nature wake up too. It's like a miracle. "

The Argus II implant was created by US company Second Sight. A camera that is attached to the pair of glasses captures images. The content is transformed into electrical pulses and sent to the implant using a wireless connection.

The electrodes stimulate the cells that still survive in the eye that send information to the brain that converts image.

The procedure was regulated by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration, the US federal agency) in 2014 and has been used gradually by American doctors.

For a patient to receive the implant, there are some conditions. It must be over 25, have had functional vision at some point in life and have some degree of serious cegueza so that the improvement brought by the Argus II is relevant.
