Kenya: at least ten buildings will be demolished in Huruma and it is estimated that another 200 will have the same fate in other parts of the city

Nairobi - Municipal Workers began demolishing buildings illegally constructed in the same neighborhood of Nairobi where last week a building fell as a result of heavy rains, leaving at least 42 dead, said the Kenyan government on Friday.

The Secretary of State for Public Works, Paul Mwangi, said that in some previous occasions property owners had managed to stop the demolition lawsuits, so this time the government decided to take action.

"This time we will demolish them, even if the courts because there are people who continue to die," Mwangi sentenced to the local press.

Yesterday four people were rescued alive after spending six days under the rubble of the building that collapsed in Huruma, a marginal neighborhood of Nairobi, tragedy caused great indignation among the population.

The Interior Ministry said that the property had been built too close to a river and had a pending demolition order that was never executed by the passivity of the local authorities.

The two owners of the property and three local government officials were arrested and questioned by police on Wednesday. They were released on bail.
