Brussels - The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has a new supreme commander. The Army General Curtis M. Scaparrotti will assume this week the command of the military organization in Stuttgart, Germany, after a ceremony at the headquarters in Belgium.

Scaparrotti, 60, will be the 18th American to take command of the alliance of 28 nations. He replaces General of the US Air Force, Philip M. Breedlove.

"Today, our way of life is threatened by numerous threats and strategic challenges," said Scapparrotti to take command. He has led the US forces in Korea.

Among the main tasks of NATO currently are armed Islamic extremism, the immigrant crisis in the Mediterranean and the resurgence of military demonstrations in Russia.
