UN makes urgent meeting to discuss situation in Syria
The UN Security Council met on Sunday (25) to discuss the escalating violence in Syria and the situation of the city of Aleppo which has been bombed since last week.
The emergency meeting was convened at the initiative of the United States, France and Britain.
Hundreds of people have died, including children. This is the collapse of the cease-fire that had been announced two weeks ago in the country.
On Saturday (24), the Secretary-General of the UN, Ban Ki-moon condemned the new attacks on the Syrian city and said he was outraged by what he called a terrifying military escalation.
Ban Ki-moon said the Syrian city is facing the most intense bombardment since the conflict began in March 2011.
In a statement, the UN leader said that since the announcement two days ago, the Syrian army offensive to regain control of Aleppo, are being registered aerial bombardments with advanced ammunition and massive anti-bunker bombs, which affect mainly refuges and civil protection sites.
For Ban Ki-moon, the apparent use of indiscriminate weapons in densely populated areas can pose a war crime.
Armed conflict
The bombings on Sunday were triggered by the resumption by rebel Islamic factions of the Palestinian refugee camp Handarat, which is in a prime position to the north of Aleppo in supply routes to the east of the city.
On Saturday they had been taken there by the Syrian Army.
Russian fighter planes and bombard Syrian neighborhoods of Aleppo, while more than 250,000 people are trapped in besieged areas by Islamic groups fighting each other and against the government of President Bashar Al Assad.
Moreover, Islamic factions, supported by Turkey, today regained control of the city of Kadrish, located north of Aleppo after clashes with the terrorist group Islamic State.
