US medical students spent time in Cuba as part of the curriculum
Washington, 28 Oct 2015 (AFP) - Medical students from Michigan State University (MSU), in the northern United States, may be part of their academic program in hospitals in Cuba from April 2016, said on Wednesday the center of higher education.
"After the restoration of diplomatic relations (...) the University of Michigan is the first to solidify an agreement with the Cuban authorities to develop a new course for our students, who account for their academic endeavors," it announced on its official website .
The intent of the program is that American students "are exposed to a health system that has been a leader in identifying the social factors on diseases and prevention when it comes to public health," said University of Michigan (MSU).
Thus, students "will learn about community medicine", obstetrics, gynecology, pediatric and geriatric care, he said.
In Cuba, students may join the Calixto Garcia Hospital, the hospital center of Havana (specialized in pediatrics) or hospital Ramón González Coro (dedicated to obstetrics and gynecology).
William Cunningham, of the MSU medical school, said that "it is the first time that US medical students may act in the halls of three major hospitals in Havana and enforce academic credit for the experience."
The Cuban medical system, recalled Cunningham, is focused on primary care and public health.
The selection of the first group of students will take place in the first two weeks of April and will be reserved for students of the fourth year of medicine or osteopathy conventional.
According to MSU, so far 30 students have already made registration.
Cuba and the United States restored diplomatic relations in July, after half a century break, with the reopening of their embassies.
