Former slave Yazidi EI becomes UN ambassador
An Iraqi girl who survived a kidnapping and abuse to which he was subjected as a sex slave of the extremist group Islamic State became a Goodwill Ambassador of the United Nations for the Dignity of Survivors of Human Trafficking.
Nadia Murad Basee Taha, a young Yezidi 23, asked that justice is done for the victims of jihadist groups and advocated the recognition of the 2014 attack on the Yazidi community as a genocide.
Murad was kidnapped at his home in the village of Kocho, near the town of Sinjar in northern Iraq in August 2014 and taken to the city of Mosul, controlled by the Islamic State. She was raped, bought and sold on many occasions.
"I used the way they wanted to use me. And I was not alone," Murad said during a ceremony at the UN headquarters.
With a trembling voice, Murad called for the release of 3,200 women and children who are still yazidies sex slaves of the Islamic State group and that the kidnappers are brought to justice.
"My real fear is that when the ISIS has been unsuccessful, the ISIS militants ISIS terrorists make their beards and walk the streets as if nothing had happened," he said. "We can not allow this to happen."
As Goodwill Ambassador, Murad will focus on increasing awareness about the plight of victims of trafficking in persons, especially refugees, women and children.
World leaders will meet next week at the annual debate of the UN General Assembly, while Iraq and the United Kingdom will launch on Monday a campaign to press the Islamic State is held accountable for their crimes.
