G20 recognizes that the refugee crisis is a global problem
Hangzhou - The G20 Summit acknowledged on Monday that the refugee crisis is a global problem and called for "global efforts" to address its causes and consequences.
The number of refugees has reached "historic levels" according to the document signed by the G20 leaders at the summit in the Chinese city of Hangzhou, with 65 million displaced people in the world.
During the plenary debate on the issue, the European Council President Donald Tusk warned that the European system of protection is about to reach its limit and that the other countries can not be left out of the crisis. He asked that the problem is not only recognized, but that take concrete measures to solve it.
Tusk cited the millions of refugees that the European Union (EU) welcomed and the billions of euros invested in the Middle East.
The EU reached the summit of Hangzhou in order to get the G20 to do more to resolve the refugee crisis, since it considers that the bloc and countries like Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon bear a disproportionate responsibility. On the other hand, some rich countries did almost nothing to try to help solve the problem, not even getting a refugee.
"We treat the migratory crisis and agree that we have to do more to fight the root causes of mass migration," said the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Theresa May.
However, the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said that today's result is not enough. G20 summit host in 2015, Erdogan said that the summit "suspended the examination" the management of the refugee crisis in a year.
"The proposed measures to mitigate the crisis were not rejected by anyone, but no country has taken concrete steps in this regard," Erdogan said, he had to get about 3 million displaced people coming from Syria and Iraq, which represented an expense $ 25 billion for the Turkish safes.
Erdogan complained that Western countries have adopted a "racist attitude security" against those seeking asylum within their borders, attitude considered as "shameful".
"Turkey will continue to receive the victims of conflicts without discrimination of origin or religion," he said.
