Brazilian researchers are developing two and a half years a vaccine that aims to eliminate the dependence on cocaine, revealed on Monday the participants of the project, which is being tested on animals.

"We have developed a molecule that stimulates the production of antibodies against cocaine in the immune system," he told AFP Professor Angelo Fatima, the Organic Chemistry Department of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), one of those responsible for the research.

"These antibodies capture cocaine, preventing it from reaching the brain and reduce the euphoric effects of the drug, which leads the user to lose interest in their consumption," said the academic.

Fatima recalled that in the United States for research in the same direction but with different molecules.

"Our molecule is different from the American. Our lacks the protein part," he said, without revealing the name of the molecule used as "has not yet been patented."

According to the Office on Drugs and Crime United Nations (UNODC), cocaine use in Brazil is four times higher than the world average.

In this situation, the vaccine is a promising strategy for the treatment of addiction.

At first, the vaccine will only be used by highly motivated patients to stop taking drugs for the prevention of cocaine abuse by children and adolescents, or in the fight against crack, says Fatima.
