In surprise move, Boris Johnson dismisses run for the post of prime minister
In surprise move, one of the leaders of the pro-Brexit campaign, the former mayor of London Boris Johnson, ruled on Thursday (30) run for the leadership of the Conservative Party and the post of prime minister.
"Having consulted colleagues and in view of the circumstances of the Parliament concluded that this person can not be me," Johnson said in a news conference in London.
His candidacy was taken for granted, after Prime Minister David Cameron announced his resignation when the vote by the UK out of the European Union won the referendum last Thursday by 52%.
The expectation of the British press was that his speech today was to announce his candidacy.
But hours before, the Conservative Michael Gove - former ally of Johnson - took the lead in the process and said he, Gove, that would be the candidate because "had come to the conclusion that Boris could not give or leadership building the team for the task ahead. "
Cove will compete with the Minister of the United Kingdom of Interior, Theresa May, who announced his candidacy in a letter published Thursday in the newspaper's website "The Times".
In the letter, May says he will serve his party and the people "mission to make Britain works for everyone."
Yesterday, the former defense minister Liam Fox and the Undersecretary of the Treasury, Andrea Leadsom also announced their candidacies. Nominations must be sent today.
As there is more than one candidate, the deputies will elect two finalists. Both will then be submitted to a vote of 150,000 affiliates. On 9 September will be known the new Conservative leader and prime minister. (With international agencies)
