Johnny Depp will auction his works of Basquiat
London - Eight works by the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat that actor Johnny Depp met over 25 years will be auctioned this month at Christie's in London.
Almost all the paintings and drawings, which will go on sale on 29 and 30 June, are 1981 and are a clear demonstration of the New York post-punk scene at the time. The auction takes place after a work untitled Basquiat be sold for a record price of 57.3 million dollars in May.
"The Basquiat market is really high. He felt that the time is right to take advantage of the record that was broken," he told Reuters Edmond Francey, head of postwar and contemporary art at Christie's in London.
It is estimated that one of the paintings from the collection of Depp - "Pork" 1981 - will be sold for about 2.5 to 3.5 million pounds (3.35000000 to 4.68000000 dollars).
Together with the works of Basquiat will be auctioned works by Gerhard Richter, Andy Warhol and Lucian Freud as part of the 250th anniversary of Christie's.
