Minister Theresa May announces candidacy to succeed Cameron
The British Minister of Interior, Theresa May, favorite to succeed David Cameron, made official on Thursday his candidacy for leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister.
"I gathered you here to announce my candidacy," said May in a ceremony in London, ensuring it is the ideal person to "unite and govern in the best interests" of the United Kingdom after the victory of Brexit in the referendum on the European Union of 23 June.
May promised that if he wins, will not help the legislative elections scheduled for 2020, and expect the next year to activate Article 50 of the European treaties to break with the EU.
The minister, 59 and the government since 2010, also said that there is no return on the decision to break with the EU: "Brexit means Brexit" he said.
May compete, among others, the Minister of Justice, Michael Gove, and all eyes are now turned to Boris Johnson, former Mayor of London and the main face of Brexit campaign, which is expected to announce his candidacy before local noon, when the term ends.
As there is more than one candidate, the deputies will elect two finalists. Both will then be submitted to a vote of 150,000 affiliates. On 9 September will be known the new Conservative leader and prime minister.
