Theresa May, an energetic minister to face Johnson
British Interior Minister Theresa May, who remained in the background during the referendum campaign on the European Union (EU), is seen as a consensus figure and the alternative to Boris Johnson in the struggle for succession of Prime Minister David Cameron .
"She remained quiet during the campaign and can therefore benefit from broader support within the Conservative Party to turn the candidate to stop Boris", he told AFP David Cutts, a professor of political science at the University of Bath.
Boris Johnson is the favorite of Brexit supporters, but, according to Tim Oliver, the London School of Economics, the next prime minister "does not necessarily have to be someone involved in the referendum campaign."
Theresa May, 59, known for his eurosceptic stance, spoke at the end in favor of the EU, but his political adviser worked for Brexit campaign.
"This establishes political ties with them and can attract the support of many eurosceptic conservative," said Oliver told AFP.
Their participation in the campaign was peculiar.
"The EU is far from perfect, but it is in the national interest to continue as an EU member," he said in February, after the reforms taken in Brussels by David Cameron.
In April merely stated during his only major campaign speech, to leave the EU "would not solve all immigration problems" of the UK.
Daughter of an Anglican reverend, Theresa May met a team around him and works behind the scenes to get the support of Conservative MPs, the newspaper The Daily Telegraph.
"The new Margaret Thatcher"
Its consensus stance took the Sunday Times to present it, four days before the referendum, as "the only figure capable of uniting the rival wings of the Conservative Party."
May, who is often described as "the new Margaret Thatcher", began his political career in 1986 after studying at Oxford University and working briefly at the Bank of England.
She was elected councilor of the London Borough of Merton. In 1997 he became Conservative MP for the prosperous district of Maidenhead, Berkshire (southern England).
From 2002 to 2003 was the first woman to hold the post of secretary general of the Conservative Party.
From 1999 to 2010 he held several positions in the conservative parallel office when the party was in opposition.
With David Cameron's election as prime minister in 2010, May was appointed interior minister, a position he maintained six years later, a result of conservative election victory last year
The Daily Telegraph describes it "as the most important woman in national politics, thanks to a fierce determination and refusal to repress his taste for shoes with leopard skin print," part of a costume always very elegant.
Married since 1980 with Philip John May, an executive of the banking sector, Theresa May has no children, enjoy tours and cooking. She rose to prominence in the government for its relentless line against crime.
It is Protestant practitioner, but he came out in favor of same-sex marriage.
