Obama warns against "hysteria Brexit"
Washington, Jun 28, 2016 (AFP) - President Barack Obama warned on Tuesday against international hysteria that followed the referendum that decided to leave the United Kingdom of the European Union (EU).
In an interview with National Public Radio, the US president said he respects the results of the referendum. However, for Obama, the vote represented "the push button to pause the project of a complete integration of Europe".
"I do not exaggerate. There was a bit of hysteria after Brexit the vote, as if, somehow, since there were no NATO, as if it had dissolved the Atlantic alliance, and each country had gone to his corner. That's not what happened".
Obama also said that the vote "speaks of the current paths and the challenges that increase because of globalization." "I think this will be the time when all of Europe will say, 'we breathe and imagine how we can keep part of our national identity, how we can preserve the benefits of integration and how we handle certain frustrations are felt by our voters'" he commented, adding that it does not provide "great catastrophic change" as a result of that vote.
