US Special Envoy to Ukraine Kurt Volker has stated that Washington is considering the possibility of supplying weapons to the military participating in the operation at Donbass, the BBC reports.
"Defensive weapons to allow Ukraine to defend itself and to destroy tanks, may, for example, actually help contain Russia, which threatens Ukraine," Volker said in an interview with the BBC.
The special envoy emphasized the importance of discussing the theme, although it is difficult to foresee a resolution.
Earlier, US Deputy Joint Chief of Staff Gen. Paul Selva said the decision on the supply of weapons to Ukraine could be taken in many months. According to him, such a step would be a "political choice".
The Ukrainian authorities have requested US weapons for three years, but no result.
It is worth noting that Washington is providing military aid to Kiev through official supply of equipment and training for the military of the Ukrainian army.
In May, the US Senate approved the federal budget bill that provides $ 150 million ($ 472 million) to help Kiev. The amount can be used for, among other things, supply of equipment and lethal weapons.
According to Russia, sending arms to Kiev will not contribute to the resolution of the crisis in the country, nor to the implementation of the Minsk Accords. Instead, sending weapons will only escalate the tension. European politicians and military are against supply; German President Steinmeier and NATO Military Committee chief Petr Pavel are on the list of people who disapprove of such a feat in the United States.
