US Representative at UN: time to negotiate over North Korea 'over'

Representante permanente dos EUA na ONU Nikki Haley

US Rep. Nikki Haley said the time to negotiate over North Korea "is over," and that another weak resolution by the UN Security Council is "worse than nothing."

The reason for such rhetoric is the recent launch of an "intercontinental" ballistic missile by North Korea.

Haley stressed that "an additional UN Security Council resolution that does not significantly increase international pressure on North Korea has no value" and this "shows to the North Korean dictator that the international community does not want to seriously challenge him" , Quotes the AFP agency as the diplomat.

"Time to talk is over," adds the US representative.

She said China should decide "if it wants to finally take an essential step."

On Sunday, US President Donald Trump tweeted that "they [Chinese] do NOTHING to us with North Korea, they just talk. We will not allow that to continue," adding that it would not be too late for Beijing " solve this problem".

Nikki Haley's statement came a day after Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Washington exaggerated the threat from North Korea because "it will take many, many years until the North Koreans can use their missiles" .

"What they are using are fairly primitive devices that take months to prepare and that can not be installed on any missiles," he said.

Russia thinks the North Korea-tested missile was an intermediate range ballistic missile (IRBM), which was revealed during the analysis of missile-detection alert system data. But South Korea and the United States say it has tested an intercontinental ballistic missile that has a much longer range.
