Beijing - China has managed to beat the record this year of birth of panda cubs by artificial insemination, 23 survived this year, merit attributed to technological advances and cooperation between the countries, said on Thursday the assisted reproduction center of the species.
A total of 26 giant pandas born this year, including nine twins and a puppy, in Washington the Smithsonian National Zoo, and three died prematurely, according to the Conservation and Research Center of Giant Panda of China in Chengtu, the world's leading center for artificial breeding of rare species.
The number hitting the center of the record since 2013, when 20 panda babies survived. It was also beaten the record for the twins since the institution opened its doors in the 80's, in the province of Sichuan, said Heng Yi, director of the Advertising Office.
The pups that survived now have between one and three months old and in good health, under the center's care.
Heng attributes the increase in births to more developed techniques and cooperation with foreign zoos.
By 2013, 375 pandas living in captivity distributed throughout the world, despite the ownership of these animals be China, so when any of these animal gives birth, the puppy should be returned to the country.
China is the only habitat of wild giant pandas. 1,864 animals of this species live in freedom in this country, mostly in Sichuan and Shaanxi.
Giant pandas are endangered and have low fertility rates because of their sexual inactivity.
The species is now also threatened by habitat loss, according to a Greenpeace report yesterday.
