Czech Republic



Surface: with a territory of 78,866 square kilometers, the Czech Republic is considered as one of the medium sized European countries, like other countries like Austria or Ireland

Borders: Germany to the west, Poland to the north, Slovakia to the east and Austria to the south.

Population: 10,304,302 after the last census.

Official language: Czech.

Currency: Czech crown

Flag: tricolor with blue, white and red. It was adopted in 1920, shortly after the declaration of independence of Czechoslovakia Republic. It consists of two horizontal fringes, one white and one red, which are the traditional colors of the Kingdom of Bohemia. A full blue triangle flag, symbolic color of paneslavista movement that was born at the beginning of the nineteenth century. In 1993, the Czech Republic retained this flag, soon after her split from Slovakia.

National Anthem: Kde Domov můj? ("Where is my home?"), Since the division of Czechoslovakia. The hymn date 1831 and consisted of František and Josef Kajetan Tyl Škroup for a musical comedy that was fashionable at the time.

Climate: The Czech Republic is a country of continental climate characterized by long and harsh winters and rainfall in the summer. The presence of mountains explains the differences between different regions.

Relief and landscapes: In the center of the country, the Elbe and Vltava rivers (Labe and Vltava in Czech, respectively) cross the regição of Bohemia. In the vicinity are mountain ranges that form the natural border of the Czech Countries: the Ore Mountains (Krušné Hory) in the northwest; the Jeseniky and Mount of the Giants (Krknose) north, where is the culmination of the country, the Sněžka or "Mountain of the Snows '' (1602 m); the mountain range of Šumava to the south. In the east, the region of Moravia is formed by valleys, basins and plains, where crosses the Morava river. This runs slowly from north to south, before flowing into the Danube.

Political system:
• Board: pluralist parliamentary democracy where parliament occupies a central position.
• Constitution: approved in December 1992 by the Czech National Council.
• Institutions:
- Assembly deputies: 200 deputies elected in the form of proportionality for a period of four years.
- Senate: 81 senators elected for a period of six years with elections every two years.
- President: Head of State and Chief of the Armed Forces, elected for a period of five years by the parliament (Senate and Assembly of Members). The power of the President is limited and this appoints the Prime Minister, members of the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court. The President has veto power at the time of approval of the bills.
• Government: The Prime Minister is responsible for forming the government and is also responsible front of House of Assembly.
The Czech Republic joined the European Union in 2004 and is a member of NATO since 1999.
