London, Oct 6, 2015 (AFP) - The United Kingdom is the country that provides the best treatment for people who are dying and Chile is the first in Latin America, according to a study released on Tuesday in London.
The Economist Intelligence Unit has published its index on "quality of death" studying palliative care in 80 countries and warns that an aging population will make this increasingly important topic.
The British leadership "should be their broad national policies, of the integration of palliative care in public health, its strong network of centers for the terminally ill and the strong commitment of society on this issue."
The study pays special part of Spain, which appears in 23rd place, to consider the issue of the impact of national strategies, and concludes that "despite its strength in many areas of palliative care, there is still much work to be done."
In a country that prioritizes die at home, "we are close to having the units at home and the medical staff we need," but "far from having enough units to children," said the Spanish expert quoted in the study, Professor Javier Rocafort Gil .
Four places behind Spain appears Chile, the first Latin American country, a region that needs to "improve the training and certification of discipline" of palliative care, according to the doctor Uruguayan Eduardo García Yanneo, the Latin American Association of Palliative Care.
But Brazil appears in 42th position, ahead of Mexico and behind Argentina (32nd) and Uruguay (39th).
The study concludes that palliative care have gained importance in all societies due to "seismic demographic change."
