A 14-year-old is brutally murdered in a remote and deserted forest. Police joins some suspects and under the nails of three of them, found traces of blood and hair remains. There is no doubt: the three are sentenced to life imprisonment for murder. This story could be part of a police series such as Criminal Minds and CSI - not a detail: the suspects were all lions.
The case occurred in the Gir forest reserve in New Delhi, the largest refuge for wild lions world. The 14-year-old boy slept in the vicinity of the reserve, where he lived with his mother when he was attacked by three lions - a male, that killed and devoured the boy, and two females, who were with the leftovers. Local authorities seized 17 cats that lived near the attack site and analyzed the remains of food in tooth and claws of animals. In three of the lions, they were found residues of human flesh. Now, the male will be sent to the zoo in Junagadh, near the region, and females will be in cages, in a rescue center for wildlife. The other 14 suspects lions return to the nature reserve.
Attacks of this kind are increasing over time. In the past six months, six people were killed by cats around Gir - and local authorities say they do not know exactly why. But one thing is certain: the reservation is super crowded. Currently, 523 lions live there, and the maximum reserve capacity of 270 cats. Therefore, the food in the reserve is getting scarce - which forces the lions to seek alternative prey - as farmers.
In 2013, the Supreme Court of India ordered Gir realocasse some of his lions in other areas, but the reservation is refused, stating that no other Indian state would be so well prepared to deal with the cats. So the tendency is that such situations continue to repeat until other strategies are adopted.
