California passes law guaranteeing equal pay for men and women

Governor Edmund Gerald Brown Jr.

"Sixty-six years after the adoption of the law of equal pay in California, many women continue to earn less than men, despite perform similar work," said Gov. Jerry Brown said in a statement.

"This legislation is another step to close the persistent pay gap between men and women," he said.

The Fair Pay Act of California was presented by Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson, after a study revealed that women earn 84 cents for every dollar paid to men.

The law strengthens existing legislation, prohibiting an employer to pay to any employee substantially less for similar work.
