Woman who lost husband with Parkinson's develops ability to 'smell' the disease

Joy Milne researchers tested to see if she could detect the smell Parkinson


In tests, Joy Milne was able to identify precisely who had the disease, which has no precise diagnostic test to date.

Her husband John Milne, Les, died in June after 65 years. He worked as an anesthetist before being diagnosed with Parkinson's at age 45.

But long before the diagnosis, Joy noticed that something had changed with her husband - six years ago, to be precise.

"His scent was not changed suddenly, it was very subtle. - He got a musky smell."
Joy just this odor related to the disease after going to attend the charity Parkinson's UK and meet people with the same characteristic smell.


For a total accident, she mentioned this while talking to researchers. They were puzzled - until today, there is no accurate test to diagnose Parkinson's.

Edinburgh University decided to test-her - and she was very precise.

Tilo Kunath, a research associate at Parkinson's UK in the School of Biological Sciences at the university, one of the first to talk to Joy.

"The first time we tested Joy, use six people with Parkinson's and six without. All used white shirts for a day, which were then folded and packaged. Her job was to tell who had Parkinson's and who did not," he says.


"She hit 11 of 12. We were very impressed."

The researchers asked people with and without Parkinson wear white clothes and then tested whether Joy could identify who had the disease

According to him, Joy hit all with Parkinson's, but insisted that one of the people in the control group also had the disease.

"But it was the control group, so he did not have Parkinson According to him -. And also according to people - he did not have Parkinson's," he says.
But the researchers were surprised months later.

"Eight months later, he reported that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson's. So Joy was not certain just 11 she hit the 12."

"It impressed us and we investigate the phenomenon."

Researchers believe that changes in the skin of people with Parkinson produce a specific odor.
They expect the "molecular signature" responsible for the smell and then develop a simple test to collect samples through a swab in the person's forehead.


Now, the NGO Parkinson's UK is funded researchers in Manchester, Edinburgh and London to study about 200 people with and without Parkinson's.

A simple test for Parkinson could have a big impact, according to Katherine Crawford, director in Scotland of Parkinson's UK.

"This study has the potential to transform the lives of people with Parkinson's," he said.
"It's an incredibly difficult disease to diagnose. In practice, still diagnosed the same way that Dr. James Parkinson was in 1817, that is, observing people and symptoms."

"A diagnostic test could expedite this by allowing people to go to the doctor, take an exam and come out with a diagnosis of Parkinson's."

She said it would be "absolutely amazing and would change their lives immediately."


"They and professionals could discuss and match a treatment program, be able to monitor the progress of the disease and treat it properly. It could also provide more opportunities for people living with Parkinson's get involved in the search."
