Michael Cimino, director of the film about the guera Vietnam "The Deer Hunter", Oscar winner, died at age 77, reported several sources on Saturday night.
The death of Cimino was informed first by the director of the Cannes Film Festival, Thierry Fremaux, and later by The New York Times, which quoted the friend and filmmaker's former lawyer, Eric Weismann. The cause of death was not disclosed.
According to the New York newspaper, Weismann said Cimino's body was found in his Los Angeles home after several friends were unable to contact you by phone.
Cimino received in 1979 the Oscar for best director for "The Deer Hunter," which opened in 1978. It is a three-hour epic that evokes the Vietnam War through the lives of three friends.
In one scene of the film, the characters incarnated by Robert De Niro and Christopher Walken, prisoners of the North Vietnamese during the war, play Russian roulette.
In addition to the best director statuette, the film was awarded four other Oscars, including best picture.
