The US "démarche", who ordered the closure of the Russian consulate in San Francisco, reveals that President Trump has no influence over his country's foreign policy, the former advisor to Republican leaders Jim Jatras told Sputnik.
On Thursday, the United States announced new restrictions on diplomatic representations in the United States that, as of December 2, the Russian consulate general in San Francisco and consular facilities in Washington and New York .
"The fact is that Donald Trump had clear intention to correct relations with Russia, but he was put in a dead end. He still says he hopes to do so, but now he adds words like 'someday' and 'possibly' "Generals and globalists hold foreign policy firmly in their hands and he [Trump] knows it," Jatras said.
He emphasized that the joint pressure of Republicans and Democrats, as well as the ongoing media attacks, forced Trump to support a policy he had long opposed.
Jatras stressed that while Washington insists on "parity", the only goal it pursues is to provoke Moscow to respond. The kind of response hardly matters, the only question is how badly the situation will get worse, he said.
Earlier, Moscow responded to the closure of diplomatic properties and expulsion of Russian diplomats with reduced American representation in the country up to 455 people, this figure being equal to Russian diplomatic officials in the United States.
