UK Navy tests anti-aircraft defense against supersonic missiles

Britain's navy has carried out the first test of its new-generation air defense system capable of intercepting and removing hypersonic missiles from the enemy, the country's defense ministry said.

Sea Ceptor missiles, developed by MBDA Missile Systems, were launched successfully off the coast of Scotland, the Defense Ministry said in a statement.

The new system is being developed to replace the current Sea Wolf system installed on Type 23 frigates. The system uses missiles at a speed three times that of sound.

The new system allows multiple targets to be reached while at the same time protecting an area of up to 1,300 square kilometers, reports the RT.

The tests were carried out using the next-generation CAMM (Common Anti-air Modular Missile) missiles. Defense Minister Harriett Baldwin said the Sea Ceptor is designed to protect Britain's interests from existing threats.

Formerly North Korea had threatened Britain with a "miserable end" if it joined the US and South Korean military exercises.
