Specialist explains why US will not start war on North Korea
Professor of the Department of Political Science at the University of Miami, June Teufel Dreyer, has appointed the editor the five reasons why the United States will not initiate military action against North Korea, even after the latest tests and threats by Pyongyang.
According to Dreyer, an important factor is the US military forces being overburdened even without a war with North Korea. "US forces are already at the limit of their capabilities," she said. In particular, she stressed that reducing the presence of US troops in Afghanistan and the Middle East will have serious consequences in those locations.
In addition, Dreyer believes that in order to take military action against North Korea, the issue of financial resources must be taken into account. She recalled that in order to deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey the United States needs to spend a huge sum.
According to the professor, the US will not start a war against North Korea also due to the reaction of other countries, which may consider the US as the aggressor.
Dreyer stressed that, moreover, China's position on the North Korean issue is not entirely clear. "We can not evaluate with certainty what China can do to protect North Korea," she said.
"The mass killing that will take place as soon as North Korea attacks the populous Seoul and its surrounding areas" will not allow Washington to start military action against Pyongyang.
The situation around the Korean Peninsula has worsened since the exchange of harsh claims between North Korea and the United States. North Korea has vowed to launch its ballistic missiles toward the island of Guam, where US military bases are located. US President Donald Trump has promised North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to respond with "fire and fury" if North Korea does something with Guam.
On Sept. 3, North Korean officials announced they had conducted a successful test of a hydrogen bomb designed to be installed on intercontinental ballistic missiles. The order to conduct the test was given by the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un. For the Ministry of Defense of Japan, the North Korean-tested cargo power was 70 kilotons, that is, much more powerful than the atomic bombs that devastated the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.
Earlier, Russia and China came up with the idea of a double freeze: the cancellation of US allies' training in exchange for Pyongyang's suspension of nuclear and missile tests.
