Electronic cigarettes are safer? Not necessarily

São Paulo - Electronic cigarettes, which are now offered as an alternative more "healthy" and an "exit door" for those who want to leave the addiction, are causing controversy.

These devices are exploding in the United States - in the literal sense.

According to a report published Sunday by the Wall Street Journal, increasingly electronic cigarette users are reporting this type of problem caused due to cheap batteries used in some products.

Manufacturers, however, say it is minimum the number of accidents and they occur due to errors of users.

The electronic cigarette uses a lithium ion battery to heat the liquid nicotine and other substances, forming a vapor that is inhaled by the user.

Many of these batteries that explode are manufactured by Chinese companies, according to the Wall Street Journal, which makes the legal proceedings in the United States.

Recently, the US government banned electronic cigarettes are taken together with the hand luggage at airports, stating that the device has caused several fires.

Now the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the regulatory body of the United States, already looks rules for this type of product can guarantee a minimum of security.

In Brazil, the electronic cigarette sale is prohibited by Anvisa, which claims that in addition to nicotine, the device has other substances that could be harmful to health.

The WHO (World Health Organization) has even equaled the electronic cigarette common, at least when it comes to banning smoking indoors, limits on advertising and sales to minors.
