Brazil and the US produce together vaccine zika

Brasília - The Butantan Institute and the Ministry of Health became partners for the development of a vaccine against the virus zika.

The information was disclosed today (27) by an entity linked to the Health Department of the State of São Paulo. The zika virus is one of the causes of microcephaly and severe fetal brain damage.

The Brazilian institution will receive investment of US $ 3 million from the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (Barda) - Research and Development Authority in Biomedicine Advanced - agency of the Ministry of Health of the United States, for research of a zika vaccine virus inactivated.

The financial transfer will take place by agreement between Barda and the World Health Organization (WHO) for the expansion of research capacity and vaccine production in Brazil.

According to the Institute, the funds will be invested in equipment and inputs for the development of vaccine against the disease. The agreement also provides for technical cooperation among experts in vaccines Barda and researchers from Butantan.

"Butantan has been working on the development of an inactivated virus vaccine. This type of vaccine has scientific development and faster technology, and use non-infecting virus, has been approved by regulatory agencies such as ANVISA [National Health Surveillance Agency], facilitated, "he said in a statement, the director of the Butantan Institute, Jorge Kalil.

Currently, the institution is the stage of immunization inactivated virus in rodents. In recent months, researchers from the institute worked in the culture process, purification and inactivation of the virus in the laboratory, the Butantan.

The expectation of the Butantan Institute is that the vaccine may be available for the first human trials in the first half of 2017. "The investment recognizes the excellence of the Butantan Institute in the research and production of new biopharmaceuticals.

Microcephaly

On Wednesday (22), the Ministry of Health reported that 1,616 cases of microcephaly were recorded from October last year until June 18.

According to the folder, there are 3,007 babies with suspected defects that had not yet completed the tests for accurate diagnosis. 40 cases are less conclusive diagnosis without considering the data from the previous report.

Of the confirmed cases, 233 had laboratory tests proving that were caused by zika virus.

However, for the Ministry of Health, this number does not reflect reality. For the binder, most confirmed cases caused by zika, but difficulties of diagnosing the disease, the situation has not been proven in the laboratory.
