Hillary Clinton wins primary in the US Virgin Islands

Pré-candidata democrata Hillary Clinton na Califórnia, dia 24/05/2016

San Juan - Hillary Clinton won Bernie Sanders easily in the primary held on Saturday in the Virgin Islands of the United States, where they were in Game Seven delegates to the Democratic convention, which will be elected the candidate of that party to contest the presidential elections in November.

The Democratic Party of the US Virgin Islands on Sunday detailed the former secretary of state has 84.2% of the votes on the islands of St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John, with a population of just over 106,000 inhabitants, in his african-Caribbean majority, including the wife of former President Bill Clinton was leaving as clear favorite.

On the other hand, Bernie Sanders only received 12.2% of votes, with what does not reach the 15% set by the American party rules so that the senator can take any delegate.

Thus, Hillary snatched the seven delegates were at stake in these Caribbean islands, as well as the four superdelegates who have already committed their vote, which draws ever closer the Democratic nomination as candidate for the White House.

The margin with which Clinton won was almost as wide as that obtained in 2008 against Barack Obama, when he got 90% of votes against 8% of the current US president.

Already in the Republican primaries held in the US Virgin Islands the winner, as was expected, was Donald Trump, who will be the presidential candidate for that party in the November 8th elections.

Residents of the Virgin Islands can not vote in presidential elections, but also can not Puerto Rico, who now also holds its Democratic primary in which Clinton also part as a clear favorite.

In Puerto Rico are at stake 60 delegates and seven superdelegates, a relatively low number, especially when you consider that on Tuesday will be held primaries in California, New Jersey, New Mexico, Montana and South Dakota.
