New York - The New York City renamed in honor sign on Tuesday a street around Madison Square Garden "Muhammad Ali Way" after the boxing legend has faced a series of struggles in the iconic arena of sport.
Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the temporary name of the street 33 (West), near the arena MSG, where some of the best fights of Ali took place in the American entertainment capital. There, with his remarkable boxing career and his civil rights activism became one of the most striking figures of the twentieth century. He died last week at age 74 after a battle fought for decades with Parkinson's disease.
"Today we are paying tribute to the man in the heart of the city," said de Blasio. "He deserves this appointment and more." Ali fought eight times at Madison Square Garden, including the epic "Fight of the Century" in 1971 against Joe Frazier.
The New York street can be renamed permanently if the legislation passed by the City Council and is signed by the mayor. There are no plans so far to make the name "Muhammad Ali Way" change permanently, and this requires first a Board member submits a bill.
