Obama switches 42 convicted feathers

Presidente dos Estados Unidos Barack Obama em fala na Alemanha

President Barack Obama commuted, on Friday, the prison sentences of 42 prisoners, convicted in good part, for involvement with drugs.

In theory, prisoners benefited from the presidential decision not pose a risk. Mostly are small dealers of narcotics, which received harsh sentences, under a very repressive penal system and today is quite questioned.

Some were sentenced to life imprisonment.

Held in different prisons of the country, they will be released between October 1, 2016 and June 3, 2018.

With these new ads, reaches 348 total pardons decided by Obama, a number that exceeds the pardons of his six predecessors.

Still, activists are asking the president to show more boldness in relation to the prison population.

The United States maintains more than 2.2 million people behind bars, including thousands with mental illness and addiction to drugs, often from disadvantaged minorities. This system generates high recurrence rates.
