The fact opens a new line of attack against extremists in Iraq and Syria.

In an interview, Richardson said that this unusual strategy demonstrates the flexibility of US naval power.

For years, the US Navy placed its aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf to conduct air strikes against targets in the Middle East.

The aircraft carrier Harry S. Truman was in the Gulf, but in recent days he went to the eastern Mediterranean and resumed air operations.

At some point, the ship should return to its port in Norfolk, Virginia, and must be replaced in the Gulf by the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower.
