First presidential debate will only Hillary and Trump
Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump will face alone in the first televised debate between candidates for the White House as the Libertarian Gary Johnson did not reach the minimum of 15% of voting intentions required to participate.
The independent commission that organizes the three presidential debates and the candidates for vice announced on Friday (16) that only the Democratic candidate and Republican are invited to the September 26 debate at Hofstra University, near New York.
According to the average obtained based on five surveys, 43% of the electorate will vote for Hillary, and 40.4% in Trump. Both are followed by far by Gary Johnson (8.4%), the Libertarian Party, and the ecologist candidate Jill Stein (3.2%).
Johnson hoped to reach the 15% mark in order to benefit from the large audience discussions.
In 2012, 46.2 million American households watched the first debate between the then candidates, Democrat Barack Obama, who sought re-election, and Republican Mitt Romney, according to Nielsen data.
"The commission can make fun of a candidate who collects 'only' 9%, or 10%, in their carefully selected research, but 9% represent 13 million voters, more than the entire population of Ohio and other states" reacted Gary Johnson said in a statement.
"And yet, Republicans and Democrats have chosen silence the preferred candidate of those millions of Americans," he added.
The debates between the presidential candidates will be held on September 26, 9 and 19 October.
The running mates Hillary and Trump, Tim Kaine and Mike Pence, respectively, will be facing on a single occasion, on October 4, to which were also the only classified.
