LONDON (Reuters) - Former Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr came together for a return to the past on Thursday for the premiere of a documentary made by Oscar winner Ron Howard on the 'Fab Four', which shows the journey the band in the 1960s.

The singer-songwriter and drummer posed for photographs on a blue carpet in Leicester Square in London for the launch of "The Beatles: Eight Days a Week - The Touring Years", which attracted hundreds of ecstatic fans, and celebrities like Madonna, Eric Clapton, Bob Geldof and Liam Gallagher.

The documentary shows years of touring the band, with McCartney, Starr and the late John Lennon and George Harrison being worshiped by fans on every continent. It features shows pictures of early career at the Cavern Club in their native Liverpool, concerts sold out around the world and its final tour in 1966 in San Francisco.

"We are all excited is the first time for us too," Starr said to the crowd about the documentary.

The film makes use of a rich collection of old images - photos, videos and audio recordings - the band at the height of Beatlemania, with fans screaming and the group in the studio. Celebrities also give testimony left the band.

"We started as four companions in a great little band and keep playing and playing and all that happened," said McCartney.
