Washington - The United States will give Israel $ 38 billion in military aid over a decade, the largest package of this type of American history, under an agreement announced this week and signed on Wednesday.
The agreement, details of which were reported earlier by Reuters, will allow Israel to modernize most of its combat aircraft, improve the mobility of their ground forces and strengthen their missile systems, said a senior US official.
While the package is the largest US military aid already given to a country, it involves concessions from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to the two sides authorities.
These awards include the Israeli promise not to seek additional funds from Congress beyond what is warranted annually in the new package and finished a special arrangement that allows the country to spend part of US aid in its own defense industry, instead of weapons manufactured by the United States, officials said.
The Memorandum of Understanding of 38 billion dollars covers the 2019 fiscal year the US in 2028 and replaces the current Memorandum of $ 30 billion signed in 2007 and expiring at the end of fiscal year 2018.
"Prime Minister Netanyahu and I are confident that the new memorandum will bring a significant contribution to Israel's security in what remains a dangerous neighborhood," said US President Barack Obama, in a statement in writing.
