Despite the "brexit" US sees "strategic reasons" for treaty with EU

Washington, June 24 - The US government said on Friday that "the economic and strategic reasons remain strong" to carry forward the negotiations on the free trade agreement and investment (TTIP) with the European Union (EU) despite decision of the British to leave the bloc.

"The importance of trade and investment is indisputable in our relations with both the EU and with the United Kingdom. The economic and strategic reasons remain strong," said the representative of the US Foreign Trade, Michael Froman, in charge of his country for negotiations on TTIP.

However, Froman acknowledged in a brief statement that the US is "evaluating the impact" that the decision to leave the UK EU can have on trade negotiations.

Similarly expressed the spokesman for the State Department, John Kirby, saying in his daily news conference that the US "will analyze how (the UK) will fit" in the ongoing negotiations for the implementation of TTIP.

The negotiation of the treaty began in July 2013 and aims to create the largest free trade zone in the world.

The initial goal was to close the negotiations on the trade agreement by the end of 2016, something that seems increasingly complicated, since the US will have presidential elections in November.
