London - The Chief Minister of Gibraltar, Fabian Picardo, said on Monday it will seek formulas to protect the membership of the territory of the European Union (EU) and suggested that the "Brexit" should be effective only in England and Wales, the regions British who voted on Thursday by the exit.
"Our position (in favor of the EU) was expressed robustly by 96% of the population. We want to continue to have access to the single market, we continue to experience the benefits of freedom of movement," Picardo said in an interview with British agency Press Association ( PAN).
The chief minister of the territory said that his argument is "as clear" as the main Scottish minister, Nicola Sturgeon, who expressed his willingness to negotiate directly with Brussels formulas to follow Scotland part of the Community block.
Picardo pointed out that, in addition to negotiations that may occur to maintain current European legislation in Gibraltar, the territory "will never be Spanish."
"Anyone who surgerir the population that the price for access to the single market, or any other subject, is to accept the joint sovereignty (with Spain), are wasting your time," he said.
"The joint sovereignty or any other attempt to usurp 100% of British sovereignty over Gibraltar is doomed to fail from the moment he is born, get out of the minister's lips Foreign Relations Spanish or any other," he said.
In addition, Picardo said that the result of Thursday's referendum, in which 51.9% of British voters expressed a desire to break ties with the rest of the European Union, does not necessarily imply the activation of Article 50 of the Treaty of Lisbon, which regulates the shutdown process of an EU member State.
Instead, he proposed the "only renegotiation of meaning the United Kingdom, as to its usefulness for Europe".
"For example, it would be a way to execute the will of the British to withdraw from the definition of the Member State to those nations who voted to leave. For example, the Welsh nation and the English nation," Picardo said.
"Even it would be possible to keep London as part of the UK regions in which the European Treaties are applied," he added.
In consultation Thursday, the British voted for leaving the EU with 53.4% of the votes against 46.4%, the same as the Welsh -52.5% against 47.5% -.
In Scotland and Northern Ireland, on the other hand, if imposed -62% stay before 38% and 55.8% versus 44.2%, respectively.
In Gibraltar, where only 4% of the population voted in favor of leaving the EU was recorded one of the most striking results against "Brexit".
