Senator John McCain is diagnosed with brain tumor

Senador norte-americano John McCain
Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix today released a medical report in which it reports on the malignant tumor of Arizona Senator John McCain. The disease was discovered after surgery to remove a clot over the left eye of the Republican.

"Tissue pathology revealed that a primary brain tumor known as glioblastoma was associated with the blood clot," according to the hospital statement.

Chemotherapy and radiation therapy are being considered by McCain and his family. Doctors said he is recovering well from surgery and his "underlying" health is excellent.

"Senator McCain received excellent treatment at the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix and appreciates the tremendous professionalism and care of his doctors and staff," the senator's press office said. "He is in a good mood and he recovers comfortably at home with his family. With the advice of his doctors, Senator McCain will be recovering in Arizona next week," the ad added.

The American Brain Tumor Association reports that "for adults with more aggressive glioblastoma, treated simultaneously with temozolamide and radiation therapy, the median survival is about 14.6 months and the two-year survival is 30%." However, a 2009 study found that "almost 10% of glioblastoma patients can live five years or longer."
