'Abstract threat': analyst assesses possibility of cold war between US and China
A full cold war with the US and its allies is something that awaits China if it does not change its behavior, said Vice President Mike Pence. The analyst Andrei Ostrovsky evaluated in an interview with the Russian service of local Radio, the probability of such a scenario.
In an interview with the Washington Post, the senior official suggested that Beijing "make major changes" in the political, economic and military spheres, which is "the best, if not the last, chance" for China to avoid a cold war scenario with the US.
Should Beijing make no concrete concessions, the US is willing to increase economic, diplomatic and political pressure on the country, he noted. In his view, the US economy is strong enough to withstand such escalation, while China's "is less stable."
The head of the Center for Economic and Social Research of China, Andrei Ostrovsky, questioned in an interview with the Russian Radio Service such a US position.
"China will not do that, it is not a country that obeys whoever it is, especially given its significant economic strength." Strictly speaking, a trade war between the US and China has not yet begun. and mutual investments quite large, "commented the expert.
According to him, to carry out a full-scale trade war, the US should abandon any contacts with China, including through third countries, which would hurt the Chinese and US economies as well as the world. But China has anticipated, realizing the strategy of the Silk Road Economic Belt of the twenty-first century, entering new markets and reducing trade with the United States.
"The economic objective of this [Silk Road Economic Belt] project is the development of relations with the countries of Western Europe. Will they agree with the decrease in trade relations with China, on which they are already significantly dependent? many questions, "concluded Ostrovsky, adding that" Mike Pence's statement appears to be a rather abstract threat.
