Man 'cries' tears of blood and leaves doctors shocked
The New England Journal of Medicine has published a report on a case that looks more like a horror movie scene. A 52-year-old Italian shocked doctors by bleeding from his eyes.
According to the edition, this is an extremely rare medical case that few professionals are capable of dealing with.
In Italy, a 52-year-old man appeared in an emergency room "crying" for blood. Tears of blood began to fall from his eyes and stopped for no apparent reason.
The tears did not affect the man's vision, he said he was not in pain or trauma or blows. In addition, according to the patient, he has never had anything like it before. The man took medication to treat his mild hypertension and during that time his blood pressure was normal, but he had mild conjunctival hyperemia (red eyes).
After further observation, the doctors determined that it was a haemolacria, a rare condition characterized by the presence of blood in the tears. Under the man's eyelids were found hemangiomas, benign tumors, caused by abnormal growth of blood vessels. The doctors prescribed drops of timolol. Over the course of a year of use, the patient no longer had the problem.
Tears of blood can occur as a result of infection, inflammation or injury, as well as vascular tumors in the eye, and although it is a fairly rare physical condition, they are not always related to serious health problems.
